Mario Benedetti was born on September 14, 1920, in Paso de los Toros, department of Tacuarembó, Oriental Republic of Uruguay, but his family moved to Montevideo when he was only four years old. He attended primary school at the German school in Montevideo, where he began writing poems and stories. Due to family economic problems he soon had to work, so he could only complete his secondary studies as a free student.
That early contact with work, allowed him to know thoroughly one of the constants that registers his literature: the gray world of the bureaucratic offices of Montevideo. Between 1938 and 1941 he lived almost continuously in Buenos Aires. There he lived a long time working in an editorial. In 1946 Benedetti married Luz López Alegre.
In return to Montevideo, he directed in 1948 the Marginalia literary magazine, which lasted until the following year, when he becomes part of the Drafting Council of the number magazine.
